Energy Efficient Windows

There’s a lot to know!

House windowWhen house hunting, you’ll likely find all kinds of windows depending upon the age of the structure and, if older, how recently it might have been updated. Window types include single pane, double pane, thermopane, triple pane, plain glass, leaded glass, low “e” glass, wired glass, and tempered glass, too. Not only does the type and quality of the glass vary, but the actual window styles provide many options and designs.  New argon gas filled windows work well to insulate, while low-e coatings reduce the heat transfer for south facing rooms. To understand more about the energy efficiency of various types of windows or to identify the best energy efficient windows for your home, try the Window Selection Tool from the Efficient Window Collaborative.

Possibly one of the most common window problems is breakage or cracking — be it from weather or a child’s misdirected ball. Shattered glass can be hazardous, but using tempered glass can prevent the majority of serious injuries. Another very common problem includes fogged thermopane windows. This unsightly problem frequently requires that comprised seals be replaced. In most cases, the problem can be resolved without the need to replace the entire window and frame.

Be sure to ask your home inspector to share thoughts regarding the quality and condition of windows in any home you consider purchasing.
