Originally known as South Northfield, then North Branch, and later Oak Glen, the village of what we know today as Glenview, finally became incorporated in 1899. Today, with over 44,000 residents, Glenview is a place where many families call home and commercial retailers and businesses thrive.

Transportation

Glenview is located with prime access to two main Chicagoland highways.  One is the Edens Expressway (I-94) and slightly east of the village, while the Tristate Tollway (I-294) borders the west side of town. With accessibility to both highways, Glenview commuters can travel to and from main locations with ease.  The heart-of-Chicago-to-Glenview trip, or vice versa, generally requires a thirty to thirty-five-minute car ride. Using the Tristate Tollway, Glenview residents can also easily reach O’Hare International Airport in roughly twenty minutes. Additionally, the Milwaukee District North Metra Train travels directly through Glenview, making two stops.  One is located in the heart of downtown Glenview and the other station, at North Glen, services The Glen area of the community.

Schools

School-aged children living in Glenview may attend one of many school districts, depending upon their location within the city’s limits. Glenview School District 34, West Northfield School District 31, Northbrook School District 30, Avoca School District 37, Wilmette School District 39, and East Maine School District 63 are all elementary school districts that cater to Glenview residents. The majority of high school-aged students attend Glenbrook South High School, a part of School District 225, but some students from the southwest portion of town may attend Maine East High School or New Trier Township High School for those living east of Harms Road.

Shopping and Dining

Formerly a U.S. Naval Air Station, The Glen has been transformed into a combined residential housing area with homes of many sizes, styles and price points as well as a high end shopping and dining area destination. A variety of restaurants and stores attract customers from all the surrounding communities. These include the Von Maur department store, Dick’s sporting goods store and many specialty boutiques.  A Crown Movie Theater and many fine and fun dining establishments will satisfy hungry shoppers and movie-goers with choices ranging from sit-down “white table cloth” restaurants to quick casual eateries – all offering a variety of cuisines.  Also available, on the northwest side of Glenview, Plaza del Prado  provides more dining options and a number of convenient shops to nearby homeowners.  Additional shops including a new Heinen Food Store, the Glenview library and main Metra station span several blocks along Glenview Road heading west of Waukegan Road.  And for casual evening fun combined with good old-fashioned Glenview spirit, don’t miss The Glenview House on Glenview Road and Grandpa’s Restaurant and Bar on Prairie near the Metra stop.

Parks and Recreation

The Glenview Park District provides residents numerous centers and programs.  Within the city’s limits, there are over twenty-six parks including amenities such as playground equipment, picnic areas, dog parks, walking paths, disc golf courses, outdoor tennis courts, and sporting fields. Park Center, one of the Glenview Park District’s main facilities, houses a top-flight health and fitness center, indoor pool, senior center, open gyms and more! The health and fitness center offers group fitness classes, an indoor track, locker rooms and towel service, as well as personal training sessions. There are two golf courses in Glenview, Glenview National 9 and Glenview Park Golf Club. The Glenview Park District is also home to the Glenview Ice Center, Glenview Tennis Club, and Flick Outdoor Pool.
