How to Add Color to Your Home in the Right Way

by Allyson Hoffman

Many people like color, but are afraid to use it in their homes due to concerns about overpowering or over-personalizing a room.  Color can also add warmth and personality when managed in the right way. Here are some tips to help incorporate color to your home and décor.

Start with Your Favorite Neutral

Before adding in color, begin your palette with a neutral shade. It can be in the brown, tan, white, crème, taupe or gray family, but it should set the background for other tones. Use your neutral color scheme on bigger pieces such as a couch or bed, the walls and/or the carpet. This helps to minimizes mistakes and ensures any other added shades will not be overly intense.

Think about Your Desired Atmosphere

Do you want your bedroom to be relaxing, the living room welcoming and the dining room exciting? Consider the desired mood in each room to help you select the right colors. For instance, red is not always a good color choice for a bedroom because it is stimulating. Conversely, it can be popular accent color for kitchens and dining rooms to stimulate the appetite.

Choose a Third Color

Selecting a third color will balance the neutral and bold shades. This is considered the 60-30-10 rule where 60 percent of your room should be neutral, 10 percent the bold shade and 30 percent a complimentary color that doesn’t overpower the other two.

Use Your Bold Color Strategically

In other words, carefully consider how and where to use your bold shade. It could be the pillows on your couch or the centerpiece on a dining room table. The brightest or boldest shade should be a burst of color used to create interest and draw your attention.

When you decorate, remember to focus on the entire room and not just one area or color. When it correctly comes together, the result is a fabulous space with strong appeal. I will be happy to answer any questions you may have, help you to find your dream home or determine the value of your existing property
