Millennium Park, Chicago, Illinois

When you think about Chicago music, mostly likely Blues or Jazz comes to mind. From its origins in the Deep South, Jazz was transported to the Northern Industrial area in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The city added its own style and sound, and created the epitome of what the world now knows as Jazz. Always a reflection of the experiences of the people who created it, the music continues in a more urban and modern style today.

The Chicago Jazz Festival was born to memorialize greats of their eras – Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, and the Jazz concerts of 37 years ago.  Developing a life of its own, it has been nurtured and supported by the Department of Cultural Affairs and the Jazz Institute of Chicago, becoming one of the most important musical events in the country for four days and nights before Labor Day each year. This year’s Festival honors the great Billie Holliday.

The Festival begins Thursday, September 3 at the Chicago Cultural Center in Millennium Park and continues through Sunday, September 6th.  Each day’s performances begin approximately at noon. Admission is free with parking is available at the Millennium Park Garage and Millennium Lakeside Garage for a fee of $35.00.

The Chicago Jazz Festival was largely responsible for the development of free and affordable cultural programs, promotion of the non-profit arts sector, and for-profit arts businesses through the Department of Cultural Affairs. It has also given rise to the Jazz Institute, which promotes an appreciation for Jazz and provides education to adults and youth of Chicago.

So visit this world-class event this Labor Day weekend and stop in at the world’s largest free Jazz Festival!  For more information regarding performers and schedules, please click here.
