Chicago Half Marathon and 5K

It’s off to the races at the HOKA ONE ONE Chicago Half Marathon and 5K. This Sunday, September 29th in Chicago’s historic Jackson Park celebrate the 23rd annual running of the HOKA ONE ONE Chicago Half Marathon and 5K benefiting the Chicago Run charity. The Chicago Run charity mission is to promote the health and wellness of Chicago’s children through innovative, engaging, and sustainable youth running programs.

The course highlights Chicago’s historic south shore and features a traffic-free Lake Shore Drive -- the only Chicago race to completely shut down this main transportation artery. Runners will traverse the streets of Hyde Park and the Museum of Science and Industry Campus before entering the north and south Lake Shore Drive lanes and evenutally finishing at the Statue of the Republic.

Making Your Household Move Easier

Buying a new house can be one of the most exciting times in your life. Moving your household possessions to that new home, however, can be one of the most stressful events you’ll experience. Given that moving is difficult, at best, there are some steps to consider that can make the process easier.

Start planning your move early. The earlier you plan your move, the more time you’ll have to attend to the details and unexpected last-minute surprises.

Get rid of clutter. This means you’ll need to sort through your belongings and discard, sell or donate everything you don’t need, don’t want or will no longer use. Once the clutter has disappeared, packing will be easier, and you’ll be more likely to sell your old home quickly.

Gather your supplies. Start collecting boxes, tape, packing paper and markers as soon as possible. Once packing gets rolling, you don’t want to run out of those materials.

Inventory your possessions, list serial numbers, and note the condition of each item. Make a video or take photos of your larger and valuable items. Tracking your belongings will make it easier at your destination and help if you need to file an insurance claim.

Log your boxes and their contents. A handy new spiral notebook can be used to record, page-by-numbered-page, the contents of each box you pack.  Number boxes as you pack them to correspond to the same numbered page in your notebook. That way when you get to your new location, finding what you need will be a much simpler task.

Start packing as soon as you can. Anything you won’t need before you move can get boxed up and be stored. This helps with de-cluttering, and also reduces what you’ll need to do as the moving date draws near..

Enlist help from your friends and family for moving day. The more helping hands you have, the faster the progress and the quicker it’s over.

Consider hiring professionals. Moving companies provide many different services, including supplying and packing boxes, moving items, unpacking boxes at your new home and carting away the debris. You can select the services you want based on your budget, your available time, and/or how much you can physically accomplish. It absolutely costs more to hire professionals than do it yourself, but your time is valuable and the added expense may be the most practical and sensible solution for you and your family.

Though moving is a lot of hard work, it doesn’t have to be an awful experience if you plan ahead, enlist help, and do as much as you can in advance before the big day arrives. This will minimize the stress of moving, and hopefully, make this your easiest move yet!

Long Grove Apple Festival

Summer has come to an end and what is a better way to welcome fall than with a festival full of seasonal treats and live entertainment. Long Groves’ Apple Festival is this Friday, September 20th through Sunday, September 22nd, located in downtown Long Grove.

Come and sample hundreds of delicious apple-inspired dishes ranging from Caramel apples to apple tempura. This event is for all ages and also features a Kid Zone complete with pie-eating contests and tons of interactive games.

Lakeview East Festival of the Arts

Your Home’s Showing Feedback -- What It Really Means

You just listed your home, are eager for showings and each time your property is shown, you anxiously await the feedback from the person who visited  hoping they plan to make an offer. While some feedback is very direct leaving no room for interpretation, it is more common to receive feedback that keeps you wondering if the buyer has further interest in your home.

I will help you crack the code so you better understand what the buyer may be thinking of your home and if there is any hope you will receive an offer.

If a buyer reports they like your home but selected another one, while this doesn’t indicate anything specifically wrong with your home, it likely means they they’ve found another similar home at a better price.

If the buyer says the yard was too small, then they likely found another similarly-or-better-priced home with a larger yard.

If the buyer says your home needs modernizing, it typically means the buyer has viewed other homes in your price range that were already updated.

If the buyer says they prefer a newer home, it generally implies that they found a home with more updates at a comparable or lower price.

Another consideration when trying to sell your home is the number of showings you have had. Some properties may be very unique and require a special buyer, but in most cases, appropriately pricing your home should be the key to selling it. More than 10 showings without an offer could indicate that your home isn’t priced appropriately based on the current inventory and most recent sales.

Your agent should also be regularly checking current market inventory for new listings as well as recent sales to make sure your price stays competitive among the active listings on the market. When your agent reviews your competitition and the total number of homes selling in your preferred time frame, this will help you to assess if your time-related goals for selling are realistic, or not.

All homes have hurdles to overcome when selling, but an appropriately-priced home will outshine its competition every time. Northern Illinois Airshow

It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s the Northern Illinois Airshow! This Saturday, September 7th, enjoy high flying acts by renowned aerobatic pilots such as the BD5 Microjet “Lil Devil,” a Navy Legacy formation flight with a T-45 Goshawk, A-10 Demo Team, an Air Force Heritage formation flight, and many more! This family-friendly event features food, beverages, photo ops and hair-raising aerial delights. Gates open at 9:30 AM and the airshow starts at noon. Tickets are $15 at the entrance. Admittance is free for children under 12 as well as many active and retired military and veterans.

Upsizing: The Pros and Cons

Downsizing is a commonly-discussed topic for those whose children have left the nest or for families wanting less room to maintain. Upsizing, in contrast, is frequently associated with growing families.  However, the need or desire for more room includes many additional scenarios.

The Challenges of Upsizing

Those desiring a bigger home will undoubtedly need to be prepared to pay more or alternately, move to an area where bigger homes are more affordable. To upsize comfortably, make sure your budget can manage the extra costs associated with a larger home that typically includes a higher mortgage, tax and insurance payments, as well as larger utility and maintenance expenses.

Not only will expenses typically rise, but so will the additional work needed to care for a bigger home with more square footage to clean and more expansive grounds to maintain. 

The Benefits of Upsizing

The most obvious benefit of upsizing your home is additional space allowing more room for anything from hobbies to recreation to an in-home office. Additional space can also make entertaining and accommodating short or longer term visitors easier as well.

Because a larger home frequently has a higher value than a smaller home, an additional advantage can include increased wealth especially as equity builds and the mortgage balance is reduced over time.

Upon its sale, perhaps corresponding to retirement years in the future when downsizing may again look attractive, a bigger and higher-valued home can provide a greater net profit and more cash at settlement – money that could be used to fund both a smaller home and excess funds to use for travel or other desired activities and pleasures.

Upsizing is a decision for families who want to weigh the benefits of purchasing a larger property against the corresponding challenges related to that reality which likely means both higher payments and extra work.
