Winter WonderFest at Navy Pier

by Allyson Hoffman

December – January, 2015

Navy Pier, Chicago, Illinois

Great family winter fun is underway at the 15th annual PNC Bank Winter Wonderfest.  Held at Navy Pier with many attractions for both young and older family members, it all takes place inside eliminating the icy cold usually associated with winter events. Young children will appreciate the rides such as the spinning cup, the carousel, and train ride. For intermediate ages through adults as well, the 50-foot high giant Ferris Wheel, Zero Gravity ride, mini Golf course, interactive Artic Peaks Climbing Wall, IMAX theater and ice skating at the Blackhawks rink offers great appeal.

The ice-skating rink, one of the biggest attractions at Winter Wonderfest, provides 170,000 square feet of skating territory. During hockey season, the rink is home to the Chicago Blackhawks Hockey team. The Winterfest offers more than 24 rides and attractions – all that can be enjoyed without coats and gloves!

Always a stalwart of community family attractions, the Navy Pier once again provides families with an opportunity for memorable fun this season creating lasting traditions for Chicago residents. The new décor is a worthy backdrop for family photo-ops with 500 glittering trees decorated with 25,000 ornaments!

The PNC Bank Winter WonderFest runs from December 5th  through to January 10th and is open from 10:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. Sundays through Thursdays, and 10:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M. on Fridays and Saturdays. For more information regarding tickets and directions, please click here.

Inspired by a true story, Gee's Bend has already touched millions who witnessed the stunning quilt work through a national exhibition tour, on PBS's NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, and in Newsweek, House and Garden, and Oprah Winfrey's O Magazine. $40-45.  Northlight Theatre, 9501 Skokie Blvd, Skokie, IL  (847) 673-6300

Happy Father's Day

by Allyson Hoffman

Happy Father's Day

A Dad is a person
who is loving and kind,
And often he knows
what you have on your mind.
He's someone who listens,
suggests, and defends.
A dad can be one
of your very best friends!
He's proud of your triumphs,
but when things go wrong,
A dad can be patient
and helpful and strong
In all that you do,
a dad's love plays a part.
There's always a place for him
deep in your heart.
And each year that passes,
you're even more glad,
More grateful and proud
just to call him your dad!
Thank you, Dad...
for listening and caring,
for giving and sharing,
but, especially, for just being you!
Happy Father's Day

Happy Mother's Day

by Allyson Hoffman

Growing up we have all had our mother's scold us or give us advice, that at the time may have not meant too much to us. Whether we like to admit it or not, those little pieces of advice and information have stuck with us and without a doubt had an impact on us as we grew up.

Below are a few phrases I am sure you heard as a kid, and may even have used them on your own children. It isn't until we are grown adults, that we realize that Mom was only saying these things out of love and concern for us.

  • Money does not grow on trees.
  • Always change your underwear; you never know when you'll have an accident.
  • What if everyone jumped off a bridge? Would you do it, too?
  • Don't make that face or it'll freeze in that position.
  • If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.
  • Don't put that in your mouth; you don't know where it's been!
  • Be careful what you wish for, it might come true.
  • Close that door! Were you born in a barn?
  • Because I'm your mother that's why.
  • If I've told you once, I've told you a thousand times.
  • Because I said so.

Wishing all you mother's a Happy Mother's Day.
